Who texts more? How to analyze your WhatsApp chat, privately

To see who texts more, export your WhatsApp chat (without media) and open it in a chat analyzer. The most telling numbers are messages per person, who starts conversations and typical reply times. Choose a tool that analyzes the file on your device, so your private messages aren't uploaded to someone's server.

How do I export a WhatsApp chat?

To export a WhatsApp chat, open the chat, tap the menu, choose Export chat and then Without media. The exact taps differ slightly between iPhone and Android:

  • iPhone: tap the contact's name → Export chat → Without media → Save to Files
  • Android: ⋮ → More → Export chat → Without media → save to Downloads
  • You get a .zip (iPhone) or .txt (Android) file with all messages and timestamps

Which statistics actually mean something?

Beyond who sends more messages, the statistics that say more are who starts conversations, typical reply times, message length and how these changed recently:

  • Who starts conversations (paired counts a new conversation after 6 hours of quiet)
  • Typical reply time per person (the median, not the average)
  • Message length: who writes paragraphs and who writes "ok"
  • When you text: weekdays and hours, including late nights
  • Hearts and affectionate phrases over time
  • How any of these changed recently

Does sending more messages mean someone is more into it?

Not necessarily. Some people send five short messages where others send one long one. Starting conversations and replying warmly are better signs of investment than raw message count.

Is it safe to use a WhatsApp chat analyzer?

Whether a WhatsApp chat analyzer is safe depends on where the analysis happens. If a site uploads your chat, your private messages sit on someone else's server. paired reads the export in your browser, so your messages never leave your phone.

Can I analyze group chats?

paired compares two people. For a group chat, you pick the two people you want to compare.

What's a normal reply time?

There's no universal one. Some couples reply within a minute, others within hours, and both can be happy. The useful comparison is with your own chat a few months ago.

Why use the median reply time instead of the average?

Because one reply after a long weekend would drag the average up. The median is the middle value: half of the replies are faster, half are slower. It reflects a typical day.

How accurate is a WhatsApp chat analysis?

Counting is precise; interpretation is not. Timestamps, senders and messages are read exactly, but word lists for things like affection can't read tone or sarcasm.

paired reads iPhone and Android exports in several languages and date formats, and tells you if a file couldn't be read instead of guessing.
